What happened

Kmart is recalling approximately 148,000 wrought-iron patio rocking chairs sold under the brand name "Gables" as part of five-piece patio sets. If assembled improperly, these chairs can collapse when someone sits on them, causing a fall. The chairs have a green textured finish and were sold nationwide from September 1996 through August 1997 for about $250. The Kmart item number is 21-34-59 and the UPC code is 018866001024. Kmart has received 84 reports of chairs collapsing, resulting in 80 injuries ranging from bruises and back pain to one head laceration requiring three stitches.

To address this recall, consumers should inspect the four bolts under their chair seats to verify proper assembly: the rear bolts should fit completely into their drilled holes, the front bolt near the rocker coil should stick out about 1/16 inch, and all four bolts should be tight. If consumers are not satisfied after inspecting their chairs, they can return the entire five-piece set to their nearest Kmart location for a refund. For more information, consumers should call Kmart at (866) 562-7848.
