Schneider Electric Recalls Xantrex GT Series Grid Tie Solar Inverters Due to Injury Hazard

Is my product affected?

Xantrex Grid Tie Solar Inverters

  • Brand Xantrex Technology Inc. - a subsidiary of Schneider Electric, of Livermore, Calif.

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Schneider Electric is recalling Xantrex GT Series grid tie solar inverters that convert solar power into utility grid voltages. A component in these inverters can degrade and cause gases to build up inside the wiring compartment. When arcing occurs, the accumulated gases can force the compartment cover to blow off with enough force to injure users or damage nearby property.

The recalled inverters were manufactured between September 2005 and August 2010 and were sold under the Xantrex, Sunpower, and General Electric brand names. Affected units have specific part numbers printed on the top, including models such as 864-0002, 864-0117, 864-0128, and many others (with some variants prefixed with "X-"). According to the recall, affected consumers should immediately contact their authorized dealer to schedule a free repair appointment.

Hazard

A component of the inverter can degrade, causing out gassing within the wiring compartment of the inverter. When arcing occurs, gasses could build and force the compartment cover to be blown off. If the cover is blown off with sufficient force it can injure the user or person, or cause damage to property in close proximity to the inverter.

What should I do?

Consumers should immediately contact their authorized dealer to set up an appointment to get a free repair of the inverter.
