What happened

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning consumers against certain baby mattresses and mattress pads—including the Baby Air Breathable Mattress, Breathe Easy Vented Infant Sleeping Surface, Sleep Guardian Sleeping Pad, and Sleep Safe Mattress Cover—that claim to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and encourage placing babies to sleep on their stomachs. The CPSC has found no evidence supporting these claims and states there is no proof that babies can safely sleep on their stomachs on these products or that they reduce SIDS risk. Approximately 39,600 units of these products were sold.

According to the CPSC, manufacturers have stopped producing and distributing these products, and retailers have been asked to remove them from shelves immediately. The CPSC states that the risk of SIDS is significantly reduced by placing babies to sleep on their backs in a crib that meets current safety standards and contains a firm, tight-fitting mattress with no soft bedding.
