CPSC, Shine International Trading Co. Inc. Announce Recall of Cigarette Lighters

Is my product affected?

Cigarette lighters

  • Brand Shine International Trading Co. Inc., of Flushing, N.Y.

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Shine International Trading Co. Inc. and the CPSC have recalled non-refillable cigarette lighters with oval-shaped transparent plastic bodies (available in red, green, yellow, orange, or purple) and metal tops imprinted with "SHINE." These lighters measure approximately 3.25 inches high and 1 inch wide and operate with a roll-and-press ignition mechanism. The child-resistant mechanisms on these lighters fail to meet safety requirements, allowing young children to ignite them. Additionally, the lighters can leak fuel and remain lit after use.

The combination of failed child-resistance and fuel leakage creates fire and burn hazards. Consumers who own these lighters should stop using them immediately and return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.

Hazard

The lighters child-resistant mechanisms fail to meet the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Act. Young children could ignite the lighters, presenting fire and burn hazards. Additionally, the lighters can leak fuel and remain on after consumers have used them, which also presents fire and burn hazards.

What should I do?

Consumers should stop using these lighters immediately and return them to the store where purchased, for a full refund.
