What happened

F.B. Packing Co., Inc. recalled approximately 8,430 pounds of shaved beef products produced on December 21, 2016, because they may contain plastic contamination. The affected products are 10-pound packages of Frank Bertolino Beef Co. Inc. Certified Angus Beef XL Shaved Steak (case code 71888) and Bellissimo Silver Beef Shaved Steak (case code 71882), both bearing establishment number EST. 17994A and a use-by date of 7/21/2017. These items were shipped to retail locations in Illinois and Massachusetts. The contamination consisted of readily visible, long, thin strands of clear soft plastic from packaging material, which was discovered when a retail store notified the company.

Because the plastic strands are easily visible and identifiable, the health risk is considered extremely low, and there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from consuming these products. The source does not specify what consumers should do with recalled products. Consumers with questions can contact Leo Bertolino, President, at (617) 269-6340, or reach the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854 (Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time). Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
