What happened

Subaru of America is recalling certain 2003-2014 model year Subaru vehicles and 2005-2006 Saab 9-2X vehicles that were originally sold or registered in specific states and territories including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The affected vehicles had their passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under an earlier recall, and these replacement inflators may explode due to propellant degradation from exposure to high humidity, temperature, and temperature changes, potentially sending sharp metal fragments toward occupants and causing serious injury or death.

Subaru will notify owners of affected vehicles, and General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflators at no charge. Affected Subaru owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614 (recall number TKA-20), and Saab owners may contact the Saab Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-955-9007. The recall began on January 7, 2020.
