What happened

Volkswagen Group of America is recalling certain 2012-2015 Passats, 2011-2014 Golf A6 models, and 2011-2013 Audi A3 diesel vehicles that were previously repaired under Takata air bag recalls. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation caused by long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and temperature cycling, potentially sending sharp metal fragments that could seriously injure or kill the driver or other occupants.

Volkswagen will notify owners and replace the affected driver's side air bag inflators at no charge. Owners of affected vehicles should contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834, referencing recall numbers 69R6, 69Q8, 69Q9, or 69Y5 as applicable.
