Volkswagen is recalling certain 2011-2019 model year vehicles including the GTI, Golf, Beetle, Beetle Convertible, Golf SportWagen, and Jetta equipped with automatic transmissions, manual handbrakes, and keyless entry. A buildup of silicate on internal switch contacts can allow the ignition key to be removed even when the shift lever is not in "Park," which creates a risk that the vehicle could roll away unexpectedly and cause injury or a crash.
Volkswagen will notify owners of affected vehicles, and authorized dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board at no cost. The recall began November 19, 2019. Owners can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 to arrange service, referencing recall number 37M2.
