What happened

W.S. Darley & Co. is recalling certain 2017-2019 WASP fire trucks built on Ford F-550 or Spartan Metro Star chassis that are equipped with Whelen brake lights. Due to specific wiring configurations in some vehicles, the brake lights may illuminate even when the brake pedal is not being pressed. This defect could confuse other drivers and increase the risk of a crash.

Darley will replace the brake lights free of charge for affected owners. The recall began on March 18, 2019. Owners of recalled vehicles should contact Darley customer service at 1-800-634-7812 to arrange for the replacement brake lights.

W.S. Darley & Co. (Darley) is recalling certain 2017-2019 WASP fire trucks built on a Ford F-550 or Spartan Metro Star chassis equipped with Whelen brake lights. Depending on the specific wiring of the vehicle, these brake lights may illuminate when the brake pedal is not being pressed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective devices, and Assoc. Equipment."
