What happened

Tesla is recalling all 2014-2016 Model S vehicles that have certain passenger frontal air bag inflators. These inflators may explode during a crash when the air bag deploys, potentially sending sharp metal fragments into the driver or other occupants and causing serious injury or death. The problem occurs because the inflators can degrade over time due to exposure to humidity and temperature changes.

Tesla will replace the passenger frontal air bag modules at no cost for affected owners. The recall began on May 29, 2019. Owners should contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 to have their vehicle repaired, and can reference recall number SB-19-20-001.
