Ford is recalling certain 2016 Ford Escape vehicles because the driver's knee airbag modules were produced without the inflator gas generant material needed to make them function properly. In a crash, these defective airbags may not inflate as intended, increasing the risk of injury to the driver. The vehicles fail to meet federal safety standards for occupant crash protection.
Ford will notify owners at no cost, and authorized dealers will replace the driver's knee airbag. The recall began on August 8, 2017. Affected consumers should contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 17C11 to arrange for the replacement.

The driver's knee airbag modules installed in these vehicles were produced without the inflator gas generant material, and, as a result, the air bags may not inflate properly in the event of a crash.
