What happened

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2005–2012 Ford Fusion, Mustang, Ranger, Edge, and GT models, along with certain Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, due to a defect in the passenger frontal air bag inflator. The inflator may rupture during a crash due to propellant degradation from long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes, potentially causing metal fragments to strike vehicle occupants and result in serious injury or death. The recall affects vehicles originally sold or registered in specific geographic zones, with older model years included in additional zones across the United States and U.S. territories.

Ford will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator free of charge. Interim recall notices began mailing on March 1, 2017, informing owners that parts were not yet available at that time. Owners will receive a second notice when replacement parts become available, and dealers will perform the replacement at no cost. Until the repair is completed, owners are advised not to drive their vehicles. Affected consumers should contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for information about their specific vehicle, referencing recall number 19S01.
