What happened

Kia is recalling certain 2008-2009 Kia Sportage vehicles manufactured between August 9, 2007, and May 13, 2009, because the wire harness cover on the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may be improperly sealed. Water can enter through this gap and contaminate the HECU circuit board, particularly with salt from melted snow, which can cause the connector pins to corrode and lead to a short circuit that increases the risk of an engine compartment fire.

To address this issue, Kia will notify owners and dealers will inspect the connector pins for corrosion at no charge. If no corrosion is found, the dealer will replace the connector cover. If corrosion is present, the dealer will replace both the HECU assembly and the connector cover. Affected owners should contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and reference recall number SC138.
