What happened

Certain 2008-2009 Sterling Bullet 4500 and 5500 chassis cab vehicles manufactured between October 15, 2007, and November 10, 2008, are being recalled due to passenger frontal air bag inflators that may rupture. The rupture could occur from propellant degradation caused by long-term exposure to humidity, high temperatures, and temperature cycling. If an inflator ruptures, metal fragments could strike vehicle occupants and cause serious injury or death.

Dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator at no cost to owners. An initial letter was mailed on July 22, 2016, and owners received notification that the remedy was available on May 12, 2017. Affected consumers should contact Sterling customer service at 1-800-547-0712 to arrange the replacement.
