What happened

Nissan is recalling certain 2013-2014 Pathfinder vehicles manufactured between June 20, 2012, and June 13, 2013, due to a potentially incorrectly installed brake light switch. The defect may cause the relay to make intermittent contact and cycle repeatedly, which can result in brake lights remaining illuminated even when brakes are not applied. The brake light switch may also interfere with the brake-shift interlock system, potentially allowing drivers to shift out of Park without pressing the brake pedal.

These conditions create multiple safety hazards: if the brake override activates, normal acceleration becomes impaired, increasing crash risk; if brake lights remain on continuously, other drivers may not recognize when the vehicle is actually braking; and if the vehicle shifts out of Park unintentionally, it may rollaway, risking injury. Affected owners should contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake light switch and replace the relay if necessary at no charge.

Hazard

If the brake override is activated, the driver will not be accelerate normally, increasing the risk of a crash. If the brake lights remain illuminated, other drivers may fail to stop when the vehicle actually brakes, increasing the risk of a crash. If the driver inadvertently shift the vehicle out of the "PARK" position without depressing the brake, the vehicle may rollaway, increasing the risk of injury.

What should I do?

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake light switch and, as necessary, replace the relay, free of charge. The recall began on July 25, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
