What happened

Hyundai is recalling certain 2011 Elantra and Sonata vehicles originally sold or currently registered in salt belt states including Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The affected Elantras were manufactured between November 12, 2010 and March 31, 2011, and the Sonatas between December 11, 2009 and February 28, 2010. Road salt can corrode the front coil springs, causing them to fracture. If a front coil spring fractures, it may contact the tire and puncture it, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will replace the front coil springs free of charge. Interim notifications were mailed on November 17, 2015, and the recall began on January 6, 2016. Owners should contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059 to arrange service. Vehicles previously registered in salt belt states but now registered elsewhere are eligible for inspection and repair. Hyundai's recall number is 133.
