What happened

Ford is recalling certain 2011-2012 Ford Fusion (without 3.5L engine), Lincoln MKZ hybrid, Mercury Milan, Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT vehicles (with 3.5L GTDI engine), and 2013 Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT vehicles (any engine) because their electric power steering assist systems may fail due to a steering motor sensor fault. If power steering assist is lost, drivers will need to exert extra steering effort at lower speeds, which increases crash risk.

Ford will notify owners and have dealers inspect the Power Steering Control Module for diagnostic trouble codes. If codes indicating loss of steering assist are found, dealers will replace the steering gear at no cost. If no codes are found, dealers will update the PSCM software at no cost. The recall began July 21, 2015. Owners should contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall number 15S18) to arrange service.
