Toyota is recalling certain 2010 through 2014 Prius vehicles because transistors in the Intelligent Power Module inside the inverter may become damaged from high operating temperatures. When this occurs, warning lamps appear on the dashboard and the vehicle enters a reduced-power mode, allowing it to drive only a short distance. In some cases, the hybrid system could shut down completely and cause the vehicle to stall, which increases the risk of a crash.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will update software for the motor/generator control and hybrid control electronic control units at no charge. If an inverter failure occurs before the software update, dealers will repair or replace the inverter assembly at no charge. The recall began on March 21, 2014. Affected owners should contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
