What happened

Honda is recalling certain 2012-2013 CR-V and Odyssey vehicles, as well as 2013 Acura RDX vehicles, because a defect in the brake-shift interlock blocking mechanism can allow the gear selector to move out of park without the driver pressing the brake pedal, particularly during cold weather. This defect creates a risk that the vehicle could roll away unexpectedly, potentially causing a crash.

If you own an affected vehicle, Honda will notify you and direct you to take your vehicle to a Honda or Acura dealer, where technicians will install an updated brake shift interlock blocking mechanism at no charge. The recall began on May 13, 2013. Owners can contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009 for more information, referencing recall campaigns S96, S97, or S98 depending on their vehicle.

Details from the source

Honda is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 CR-V, Odyssey, and model year 2013 Acura RDX vehicles. During sub-freezing temperatures, the brake-shift interlock blocking mechanism may become slow and allow the gear selector to be moved from the Park position without pressing the brake pedal. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
