What happened

Subaru is recalling certain 2010-2013 Legacy, Outback, Impreza, and XV Crosstrek vehicles equipped with an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory. If the RES fob is dropped, it may malfunction and randomly transmit an engine start request without the button being pressed, causing the engine to inadvertently start and run for up to fifteen minutes. The engine may continue to start and stop repeatedly until the fob battery is depleted or the vehicle runs out of fuel.

This defect poses a risk of carbon monoxide buildup if the vehicle is parked in an enclosed area, which may cause headaches, dizziness, or in extreme cases, unconsciousness and asphyxiation. Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the defective RES key fobs free of charge. Owners can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information about the recall, which began on April 22, 2013.
