What happened

Caterpillar is recalling certain 2012-2013 model year CT660 commercial trucks manufactured between December 2, 2010, and January 26, 2012, that are equipped with Bendix ATR-6 traction relay valves. In extremely cold conditions, these valves may develop internal leakage that can cause air pressure to be delivered to the primary or secondary brake, resulting in continuous and unexpected brake application.

The continuous brake application can cause the brakes to overheat and potentially catch fire, or it can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle and crash. Additionally, the brakes may apply without illuminating the brake lights, preventing other drivers from receiving proper warning. According to the recall notice, Caterpillar will notify owners and dealers will repair the vehicles at no charge. Affected owners may contact Caterpillar at 309-675-5658.

Hazard

UNEXPECTED CONTINUOUS BRAKE APPLICATION CAN CAUSE THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. ALSO, THE BRAKES MAY BE APPLIED WITHOUT ILLUMINATING THE BRAKE LIGHTS, FAILING TO GIVE PROPER WARNING TO OTHER DRIVERS.

What should I do?

CATERPILLAR WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CATERPILLAR AT 309-675-5658.
