Toyota and Lexus passenger cars equipped with Takata airbags are subject to a recall due to a defect in the airbag inflator. The ammonium nitrate propellant in these inflators can degrade over time when exposed to high humidity, high temperatures, and temperature cycling. If an airbag deploys in an affected vehicle, the degraded propellant may cause excessive internal pressure, potentially rupturing the inflator body and releasing metal fragments through the airbag cushion that could injure occupants.
