What happened

Food-imitating decorative products made of polystyrene have been recalled due to choking hazards. The products are miniature sugar-coated apples (yellow and red), cherries (red), and pears (yellow and red), each attached to wire stems. They are sold by Kaufland Bulgaria in packages containing 16 apples, with packaging featuring a Christmas tree and candy cane design and labels in seven languages including Bulgarian. The barcode is 4300175785747. The products pose a risk because the imitation fruit can easily detach and be placed in the mouth and swallowed by children, particularly young children who may mistake them for real fruit.

The products do not comply with European Directive 87/357/EEC, which prohibits products that appear to be something other than what they are if they endanger consumer health or safety. Authorities have ordered a sales ban and withdrawal from the market. The source does not specify what remedy is available to consumers who have purchased these products.
