Volkswagen has recalled hand-operated accelerator and brake controls fitted to disabled drivers in certain Golf, New Beetle, Polo, Passat, Lupo, and Sharan vehicles built between May 2002 and May 2005. The controls were manufactured with an incorrect material for the bearing-pin swivel plate, which can cause hairline cracks to develop in the bearing-pin weld seam. In severe cases, the bearing pin may come loose, potentially causing the accelerator or brake controls to malfunction or fail completely, which could result in an accident.
