Prestone Recalls Shop Pro RV & Marine Antifreeze Due to Risk of Methanol Poisoning; Sold Exclusively at AutoZone

Is my product affected?

Shop Pro RV & Marine Antifreeze

  • Brand Prestone Products Corporation, of Torrance, California

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Prestone is recalling Shop Pro RV & Marine Antifreeze sold exclusively at AutoZone because certain bottles were improperly filled with a product containing methanol instead of the correct antifreeze. These mislabeled bottles lack required warning labels about methanol's dangers, including that its vapors are harmful and the product can cause poisoning, blindness, or death if swallowed. Additionally, the flushing directions printed on the bottles may not adequately remove methanol from potable water systems, creating a risk of accidental ingestion.

The recall affects only one-gallon clear bottles containing blue fluid with date code FT21281 printed on the bottom below the back label. Bottles containing pink liquid are properly labeled and safe to use. According to the record, consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and contact Prestone for a full refund and disposal instructions. Anyone who has already used the mislabeled product in a potable water system should not drink water from that system and should immediately contact Prestone for instructions on properly flushing it.

Hazard

Bottles labeled as Shop Pro RV & Marine Antifreeze were improperly filled with a product containing methanol. These improperly filled bottles do not have the mandatory cautionary label for products containing methanol warnings, including that the vapors are harmful and the product can be fatal or cause blindness if swallowed. Also, the directions on the bottle for properly flushing a potable water system can fail to adequately remove the methanol, presenting a risk of ingestion. Products containing methanol pose a poisoning hazard through inhalation or if ingested.

What should I do?

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled antifreeze and contact Prestone for a full refund and instructions on how to properly dispose of the product. Consumers who have already used the mislabeled product in any potable water system, SHOULD NOT DRINK WATER FROM THE SYSTEM and immediately contact Prestone Products for instructions on how to properly flush their water system.
