What happened

The Petzl PIRANA descender, an aluminum canyoneering device available in orange (model D005AA00) and black (model D005AA01), is being recalled due to a hazard where the user's rope can become caught or wedged in the device's blocking slot. This malfunction can stop or suspend the climber during descent, creating a drowning risk if the person is positioned under a waterfall or pool. The recalled devices have serial numbers between 19 F 0000000 000 and 22 A 9999999 999, which can be found on the product's frame.

According to the recall, consumers should immediately stop using the PIRANA descender and contact Petzl for a full refund that includes return shipping costs. Petzl will provide consumers with a postage-paid label to return their recalled descender device.

This recall involves the Petzl PIRANA descender, an aluminum adjustable friction descender device for canyoneering.
