What happened

Sony has expanded a recall of lithium-ion battery packs used in 18 models of VAIO Series laptop computers due to a hazard where the batteries can overheat and create burn and fire risks. The recalled Panasonic batteries have model number VGP-BPS26 with part numbers 1-853-237-11 or 1-853-237-21 printed on the back. These batteries were either installed in new laptops, sold separately, or installed by Sony during repairs. The recall now includes battery packs previously determined to be unaffected by an earlier June 15, 2016 recall.

According to the recall notice, consumers with affected battery packs should immediately stop using them, power off their laptop, and remove the battery. Consumers should then follow instructions to obtain a free replacement battery pack from Sony. Until a replacement arrives, consumers may continue using the laptop by connecting it to AC power only without the battery installed.
