Is my product affected?

Smoke alarms

  • Brand Universal Security Instruments Inc., of Owings Mills, Md.

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Universal Security Instruments Inc. is recalling several models of smoke alarms because a capacitor inside can burn out, causing the alarm to fail during a fire or smoke emergency. When the capacitor fails, it can release smoke and melt the alarm's cover. The recalled models include Safe T Alert SA-785, Universal SS-785, Universal SS-795, and USI Electric USI-1203 units. Consumers can identify their alarms by removing the cover and checking the manufacture date code and model number on the back; the recalled units have date codes BCSR or BESS.

Affected consumers should call Universal Security Instruments Inc. to receive a free replacement alarm. Consumers can identify recalled models by looking for the specific model numbers and date codes listed in the recall announcement.
