Petzl America is recalling GRIGRI 2 belay devices used by rock climbers to manage safety ropes. The devices can malfunction when excessive force is applied to the handle, causing it to become stuck in the open position. When this occurs, the assisted braking function stops working, which creates a fall hazard for users. The affected devices have serial numbers beginning with 10326 through 11136, which are engraved on the underside of the product beneath the folded handle. The GRIGRI 2 measures 4 inches long by 2 inches wide and is available in grey, blue, and orange.
Consumers who own an affected GRIGRI 2 belay device should stop using it immediately and contact Petzl America for a replacement.
