What happened

Aroma Housewares is recalling approximately 40,000 juice extractors due to a laceration hazard. The model ACJ-250 juice extractors, with date codes from February 1998 and earlier, can have their filter and lid break apart and project metal and plastic pieces into the air, potentially causing injuries. The company has received 26 reports of this problem, with 18 consumers injured, including three injuries requiring stitches. The white and clear plastic units with metal filters were sold at discount specialty and department stores from March 1996 through February 1998 for about $25.

According to the recall notice, consumers should stop using the recalled juice extractors immediately. The company is providing free replacement filters and lids. Affected consumers should call Aroma Housewares at (800) 276-6286 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PDT Monday through Friday to obtain the replacements.

Announce Recall of Juice Extractors WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Aroma Housewares Co., of San Diego, Calif., is recalling about 40,000 juice extractors. The juice extractor's filter and lid can break apart and project metal and plastic into the air, causing injuries to consumers. Aroma Housewares has received 26 reports of the juice extractor's filter and lid breaking apart, resulting in 18 consumers suffering injuries. Three of these injuries required stitches. The juice extractors involved in this recall are model ACJ-250 with date codes February 1998 and before. The date code is a four-digit number on the bottom of the unit. The first two numbers represent the month and the last two numbers represent the year. If there is no date code, the juice extractor is included in the recall. The juice extractor is made of white and clear plastic and has a metal filter. "Aroma" is print on the front of the unit. Discount specialty and department stores, including Rite Aid and Payless Cashways, sold these juice extractors from March 1996 through February 1998 for about $25. Consumers should stop using the recalled juice extractors immediately. The company is providing free replacement filters and lids. Consumers should call Aroma Housewares at (800) 276-6286 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PDT Monday through Friday.
