What happened

Yang Lin Trading Inc. and Wholesale World Inc. are recalling approximately 176,000 sets of miniature Christmas lights due to fire and electrocution hazards. The lights are poorly constructed with undersized wires, no fuse to protect against overheating, and wires that can easily pull out of plugs. Yang Lin Trading distributed about 130,000 strings of multicolored lights (100-light strings with five-way flashers and 140-light chasing lights with music) packaged as "JUEGO DE LUCES DE NAVIDAD," while Wholesale World distributed about 46,600 strings of 50 and 100 lights in clear and multicolored sets with specific UPC codes (97411-13050 or 97411-13100). The lights were sold in small discount stores across Texas, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, New York, and Arizona between August and December 1998 for $3 to $18. Neither company's products had certification labels from independent testing laboratories like Underwriters Laboratories. As of the recall announcement, the CPSC had not received any reports of injuries or incidents involving these lights.

Consumers who purchased these recalled Christmas lights should immediately stop using them. The lights may be returned to the place of purchase for a refund. For additional information, consumers can contact the CPSC Hotline at (800) 638-2772 anytime.
