First Alert True Fit Safety Gates (model CSSG1) are being recalled by BRK Brands Inc. due to a choking hazard. The plastic parts of these gates can break off into small pieces, including bumpers, hinges, and parts of the handle. BRK has received over 1,000 reports of parts breaking, sometimes into small pieces, and six reports of children having broken pieces in their mouths, though no actual choking incidents have been reported. In some cases when parts break off, the gate will no longer be secure. The gates, which are expandable and pressure-mounted child security gates made of off-white plastic with gray handles, were sold nationwide beginning in October 1996 for about $35 at retailers including Toys R Us and Hills.
Consumers should stop using these gates immediately and call BRK toll-free at (888) 777-5599 (available 24 hours a day) to obtain a full purchase price refund. This recall includes all First Alert True Fit safety gates (model CSSG1), including replacement gates that were offered in a previous September 1997 recall.
