Payless ShoeSource is recalling approximately 80,000 children's sneakers sold between March and June 1998 because metal clasps attached to the zippers can detach and pose a choking hazard to young children. The recall involves two types of COASTERS brand sneakers with white rubber soles and canvas uppers: the "Royal Zipper Low" in royal blue with a metal teddy bear clasp, and the "White Zipper Low" in white with a metal heart clasp. The sneakers were sold in toddler sizes 5 through 10 for about $10. Payless is aware of two incidents where children ingested the metal clasps, with one child reportedly beginning to choke.
Consumers with these sneakers should immediately remove them from children and return them to a local Payless ShoeSource store for a refund, or mail them to the recall address listed with their return address enclosed to receive a full refund and postage reimbursement. Consumers can contact Payless ShoeSource at (800) 444-7463 for more information.
