Performance Inc. is voluntarily recalling approximately 5,000 bicycles due to defective seat posts manufactured by Polygon Industries Corp. The seat posts contain a clamp bolt underneath that can break or fracture, potentially causing riders to lose control of the bicycle and suffer serious injury. Performance has received five reports of seat post failures resulting in minor injuries including cuts and bruises. The affected bicycles are Performance models X203, X204, M603, M604, M704, and M705, which were sold nationwide through Performance bicycle stores and mail order catalogs between March 1993 and April 1996 for between $300 and $500.
Consumers who own these bicycles should stop using them immediately. According to the recall, affected consumers should either call Performance's Technical Department at (800) 553-8324 or return their bicycles to the nearest Performance Bicycle Shop, where the seat post clamp bolt will be replaced free of charge.

Announce Bicycle Recall WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Performance Inc. of Chapel Hill, N.C., is voluntarily recalling about 5,000 bicycles with defective seat posts manufactured by Polygon Industries Corp. of Taiwan, R.O.C. The seat posts have a clamp bolt under them, which can break or fracture. Riders could be seriously injured by losing control of a bicycle with a broken seat post. Performance has received five reports of the seat posts failing, resulting in minor injuries, including cuts and bruises. Performance bicycles, models X203, X204, M603, M604, M704, and M705, are equipped with a defective PM-215 seat post. Performance bicycle stores and the Performance mail order catalog sold the bicycles nationwide from March 1993 through April 1996 for between $300 and $500, depending on the model. Consumers should stop using the bicycles immediately and call Performance's Technical Department at (800) 553-8324 or return the bicycles to the nearest Performance Bicycle Shop, where the seat post clamp bolt will be replaced free-of-charge.
