What happened

Monarch Industries Inc. is recalling approximately 250 Monarch and Red Lion well pumps sold between December 1993 and April 1994 due to an improper connection between the pressure switch and the motor that leaves the unit ungrounded. This defect poses a severe hazard of electric shock or, in extreme cases, electrocution. The pumps, which cost less than $500, were sold to retailers including Mills Fleet Farm in Minnesota and Wisconsin, D and B Supply in Idaho, Saginaw Plumbing and Heating in Michigan, and Weber Industries in Missouri. Consumers can identify recalled pumps by checking the nameplate on the pump casing for specific serial numbers (5093, 5193, 5293, 0194 through 1394) and model numbers (including JKC, JKS, and RLC series models).

Consumers who own a recalled pump should not touch or attempt to remove it. According to the recall notice, if feasible, consumers should immediately turn off the power to the pump and call Monarch Industries at (800) 667-1457 to arrange for a serviceman to repair, replace, or refund the pump free of charge. The CPSC and Monarch report no known injuries from this product.
