The Wild Goose Company is recalling approximately 5,100 "Professor Wacko's Exothermic Exuberance" chemistry kits marketed for children ages 10 and older. The kits contain two identical-looking bottles with different contents—glycerine and potassium permanganate—that are meant to demonstrate heat and fire generation. If a child or adult accidentally switches the bottle caps after use, causing the chemicals to mix, an unexpected fire may result. The CPSC is aware of at least two house fires reportedly caused by this scenario. Additionally, the kit lacks adequate warnings and directions for safe use.
The kits were sold for approximately $6.00 each at school supply stores and Natural Wonders stores nationwide between September 1993 and February 1994. They were manufactured by Wild Goose Company in Salt Lake City, Utah, and also distributed by Carson-Dellosa Publishing of Greensboro, North Carolina. Consumers should stop using these kits immediately and return them to the place of purchase for a refund, or contact Wild Goose Company at (800) 373-1498 for instructions on mailing the product back for a full refund including postage.
