Baseline Design Division of Crain Industries Inc. is recalling approximately 2.5 million bean bag chairs sold nationwide between 1990 and 1994 due to a suffocation hazard. Young children and toddlers can suffocate by inhaling the small foam pellets if they unzip the chair. The recall was triggered after a 19-month-old toddler in Unionville, Missouri died in September 1994 after unzipping a bean bag chair, crawling inside, and inhaling the foam filling. Another incident involved a 2½-year-old girl from El Paso, Texas who survived after inhaling and ingesting foam pellets when her older brother zipped the chair closed with her inside. The chairs, which retail for about $20 and were sold at stores including Walmart, Kmart, Lillian Vernon, and Target, come in various colors, patterns, and fabrics.
Consumers who own a bean bag chair with "Base Line Design" printed on the label should stop using it and keep it away from young children. According to the recall notice, affected consumers should call 800-497-3626, ext. 2997 for instructions on returning the bean bag chair free-of-charge so Baseline Design can retrofit the chair to eliminate the hazard.
