Dorel Juvenile Group is recalling the Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gate (model number 42111) that was manufactured before December 31, 2007. The recalled gates are white metal with a gray handle and feature a motion sensor nightlight. The hinges holding the gate in place can break, which poses a fall hazard to children if the gate is positioned at the top of the stairs.
Consumers who have the recalled gate should stop using it and contact the company to receive a free repair kit. The model number is printed on a sticker under the handle panel, and the manufacture date can be found below the handle on a date wheel (with an arrow indicating the month and the year stamped inside the circle) or on a sticker inside the battery door.
