Alexander Designs Brand Drop-Side Cribs Sold Exclusively at JCPenney Recalled for Repair Due to Entrapment, Suffocation and Fall Hazards

Is my product affected?

Alexander Designs Ltd. brand drop-side cribs

  • Brand Jardine Enterprises Ltd., of Taipei, Taiwan

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Alexander Designs brand drop-side cribs sold at JCPenney are being recalled because the hardware that holds the drop-side rail can break or fail, causing the rail to detach from the crib. When this happens, a dangerous gap opens up between the drop-side and the mattress where infants and toddlers can become trapped, wedged, or strangled. Children can also fall out of the crib if the drop-side rail detaches or falls unexpectedly. The problem can occur due to faulty hardware, incorrect assembly, or wear and tear over time.

The affected models are the Alexander 3-in-1 Crib, Alexander Classic Crib, and Alexander Sleigh Crib, identified by JCPenney item numbers 343-8359, 343-8180, and 343-8802 respectively, in various colors. According to the recall, consumers should stop using these cribs immediately and contact the manufacturer to obtain a free repair kit that will lock the drop-side rail in place. Until the repair is obtained, parents should move their child to an alternate safe sleeping space such as a bassinet, play yard, or toddler bed appropriate for the child's age.

Hazard

The drop-side rail hardware on the cribs can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side detaches, a hazardous gap is created between the drop-side rail and the crib mattress in which infants and toddlers can become wedged or entrapped, posing risks of suffocation and strangulation. In addition, children can fall out of the crib when the drop-side rail falls unexpectedly or detaches from the crib. Drop-side rail failures also can occur due to incorrect assembly or with age-related wear and tear. Other models of Jardine drop-side cribs were recalled for repair on June 24, 2010.

What should I do?

Consumers should immediately stop using the cribs and obtain a free repair kit that will immobilize the drop-side rail. In the meantime, parents are urged to find an alternate, safe sleeping environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard or toddler bed depending on the child's age.
