Asurion Recalls Counterfeit BlackBerry-branded Batteries Due to Burn and Fire Hazards

What happened

Asurion is recalling counterfeit BlackBerry-branded batteries that were included with refurbished BlackBerry devices distributed through its handset protection program before November 1, 2009. The counterfeit batteries can overheat and pose burn and fire hazards. Genuine BlackBerry-branded batteries and all other Asurion or BlackBerry products are not affected by this recall.

If you received a refurbished BlackBerry device from Asurion prior to November 1, 2009, you should immediately stop using the product and contact Asurion for a replacement. Asurion is directly contacting consumers known to have received affected batteries to notify them of the recall.

This recall involves only BlackBerry®-branded batteries provided with refurbished Blackberry®-branded devices. The refurbished devices were sent to consumers by Asurion through a handset protection program. The batteries were used across virtually all models of refurbished BlackBerry devices distributed by Asurion prior to November 1, 2009. Genuine Blackberry-branded batteries are not included in this recall. No other Asurion or BlackBerry products are involved in this recall.
