What happened

Polaris Industries is recalling certain 2009 and 2010 Sportsman ATVs manufactured between January and August 2009 because the front suspension ball joint stem can separate from the steering knuckle. This separation can cause riders to lose steering control, which poses a risk of injury or death. The affected models include the 2009 Sportsman XP 550, Sportsman XP 550 EPS, and Sportsman XP 850 and Sportsman XP 850 EPS; the 2010 Sportsman 550, Sportsman X2 550, Sportsman Touring 550, and Sportsman Touring 850. The VIN number and manufacture date can be found on the right front of the ATV on the frame rail next to the front shock.

According to the recall notice, consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ATVs and contact their local Polaris dealer to determine if their model and VIN number are included in the recall and to schedule a free repair. Polaris is directly contacting registered owners about the recall.
