Trane Recalls Air Conditioners after Incidents of Units Smoking

Is my product affected?

PTEE and PTHE Series Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTACs)

  • Brand Qingdao Haier Air Conditioner, of Qingdao, China

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Trane is recalling Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTACs) from the PTEE and PTHE Series that were manufactured between March 2006 and July 2006. The recalled units come in 208-, 230-, and 265-volt models. A heating element in these units can become displaced and contact metal, potentially causing a short circuit. In 265-volt models, this short circuit could leave the unit energized even when the fan is off, causing the unit to overheat and smoke. While incidents have only been reported with 265-volt models, Trane is inspecting all affected voltage models as a precaution.

To identify whether your unit is recalled, check the Manufacturer's Data Plate located behind the molded plastic cover above the power connection for a date code between F06C and F06G and verify that your model number matches one of the listed models. According to the recall notice, Trane has already contacted affected customers directly regarding the remedy, which involves rewiring or replacing the power connectors and visually inspecting and replacing the heaters as necessary on 265-volt models.

Hazard

The heating element on these commercially installed units can become displaced and, if it contacts metal, could short circuit. If the electric heater on one of those units short-circuits, wiring problems on 265-volt models could allow the unit to remain energized while the unit's fan is turned off, causing it to overheat and smoke.

What should I do?

The power connectors are being rewired or replaced, and the heaters will be visually inspected and replaced as necessary in the 265-volt models. Although there have been no incidents with the 208-volt and 230-volt models, Trane is still inspecting these units as a precaution. Trane has contacted the affected customers directly.
