Is my product affected?

Hoist Exercise Benches

  • Brand Hoist Fitness Systems Inc., also does business as Body Gear, of San Diego, Calif.

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Hoist Fitness exercise benches are being recalled because the front frame assembly with the foot rest can fail to lock properly, creating a risk that users' fingers could become trapped between the front and back frame sections, potentially causing lacerations or amputations. The recall affects four bench models: the Hoist "5-Position Fold-Up Bench" (models HF-140 and HF-142), the BodyGear by Hoist "5-Position Fold-Up Bench" (models BG-141 and BG-143), the Hoist "Folding Flat Bench" (model HF-4163), and the Hoist "Folding Ab-Crunch Bench" (model HF-4262). These are free-standing benches with white, gray, or black steel bases and black vinyl seats and backrests, typically used for free weight workouts.

Consumers who own one of the recalled benches should contact Hoist Fitness and provide the serial number, which is located on a white sticker behind the bench seat. Only benches with certain serial numbers are included in the recall. If the serial number matches, consumers should stop using the bench. Owners of the Hoist "5-Position Fold-Up Bench," BodyGear by Hoist "5-Position Fold-Up Bench," and Hoist "Folding Ab-Crunch Bench" should request a free repair kit, while owners of the Hoist "Folding Flat Bench" can arrange for a full refund and return of the bench.

Hazard

The bench's front frame assembly (with the foot rest) can fail to lock into place, allowing users who grab the bench to position themselves to get their fingers entrapped between the front and back frame assemblies. This poses laceration and amputation hazards.

What should I do?

Consumers should contact Hoist Fitness to see if their bench's serial number is included in this recall. If it is, stop using the recalled exercise bench and arrange to receive a free repair kit. Consumers who own the Hoist "Folding Flat Bench" should contact Hoist to return the bench for a full refund.
