Crown Boiler Recalls Home Heating Boilers Due to Carbon Monoxide Hazard

Is my product affected?

Gas-fired hot water boilers

  • Brand Crown Boiler Company, of Philadelphia

Check against the official notice below — it lists the full affected range.

What happened

Crown Boiler is recalling CWD series cast iron hot water boilers manufactured between May 1, 2005 and July 1, 2013. These red and gray boilers, which heat homes using natural gas or liquid petroleum through baseboard, floor, or radiator systems, have a defective air pressure switch that can fail to shut down the burners if the vent system becomes blocked. When this occurs, the boiler can emit excessive amounts of carbon monoxide, creating a poisoning hazard. The affected boilers are approximately 37 inches tall and 23 inches deep, with widths ranging from 16 to 42 inches, and display the Crown Boiler logo on the front. Model numbers begin with CWD, and the manufacturing date can be found on a white rating label on the upper right side of the boiler, either in date format (MM/DD/YYYY or M/D/YYYY) or as a two-letter code.

Consumers who own a recalled boiler should immediately contact the installer or distributor from whom they purchased the boiler, or contact Crown Boiler directly, to schedule a free in-home repair. If consumers continue using the boiler while waiting for repair, they should install a working carbon monoxide alarm outside sleeping areas in the home.

Hazard

The air pressure switch can fail to shut down the burners in the event that there is a blockage in the vent system allowing the boiler to emit excessive amounts of carbon monoxide, posing a CO poisoning hazard to the consumer.

What should I do?

Consumers with recalled boilers should immediately contact the installer or distributor from whom they purchased the boiler or Crown Boiler to schedule a free in-home repair. Consumers who continue using the boilers while awaiting repair, should have a working carbon monoxide alarm installed outside of sleeping areas in the home.
