Bard Access Systems is recalling BD Needle Kits for Powered Driver in three sizes (15mm, 25mm, and 35mm) used for intraosseous needle placement when intravenous access is not possible in emergency situations. The problem involves the obturator—a component of the needle set—locking to the needle hub and becoming difficult or impossible to remove after the needle is placed. This issue stems from out-of-tolerance dimensions and unclear instructions for use. Approximately 80,200 kits are affected across numerous U.S. states and internationally in Canada and Singapore.
When the obturator cannot be removed as designed, patients may require new needle placement, which can delay emergency therapy. Specific lot numbers and expiration dates are provided for identification of affected kits. The recall record does not specify what actions affected consumers should take in response to this recall.
