BMW is recalling certain X5 and X6 vehicles from model years 2007–2013 that were registered in specific geographic zones across the United States and U.S. territories. The passenger front air bag inflator in these vehicles may explode during a crash, potentially sending sharp metal fragments toward occupants and causing serious injury or death. The vehicles affected depend on their registration location, with different model year ranges recalled in different zones.
BMW will notify owners and replace the passenger front air bag module at no cost through authorized dealers. The recall was expected to begin in March 2018. Affected consumers should contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and the record advises owners not to drive their vehicles until the repair is completed.
