What happened

Takata air bag inflators used in certain 2013 model year vehicles may explode due to propellant degradation caused by exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and temperature cycling. An inflator explosion can send sharp metal fragments at drivers and passengers, potentially causing serious injury or death. This recall applies to vehicles ever registered in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Takata is working with vehicle manufacturers to identify which vehicles received the affected inflators as original or replacement equipment, with multiple recalls expected to be announced by individual vehicle manufacturers. The recall began on January 2, 2018. Vehicles registered outside the listed states may be covered under separate recalls 18E-002 or 18E-003. The source does not specify what action an affected consumer should take.
