What happened

Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling certain 2015 C300 4Matic and C400 4Matic vehicles manufactured between March 28, 2014, and September 18, 2014. The steering coupling interlock mechanism may not be locked in place, which could allow the sliding shaft of the steering column to become disengaged from the steering coupling socket. This disengagement could occur due to vibrations, steering thrust, or load feedback from the road surface and may result in noises, steering backlash, and potentially a loss of steering control that could increase crash risk.

Owners of affected vehicles should contact Mercedes-Benz USA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 to arrange an inspection. Dealers will inspect the steering coupling interlock mechanism to verify it is in the locked position, and this inspection will be performed free of charge. The recall identification number is 2014090008.
