What happened

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2011 F-650 and F-750 trucks manufactured between December 3, 2010, and December 20, 2011, that are equipped with Bendix ATR-6 antilock traction relay valves. In extremely cold conditions, these relay valves may develop internal leakage that can cause air pressure to be delivered to the primary or secondary brake, resulting in continuous brake application. This defect can cause the brakes to overheat and potentially catch fire, may cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle and crash, and may apply the brakes without illuminating the brake lights to warn other drivers.

Ford will notify owners of affected vehicles, and dealers will install a Bendix ATR-6 traction relay valve kit at no charge. The safety recall began on April 12, 2012. Owners of affected vehicles should contact Ford Motor Company at 1-800-392-3673.
