What happened

Pitts Enterprises is recalling certain model year 2005 through 2008 flatbed tractor trailers (models LT, LP, LB-35, HD-35, TA, and PT) manufactured from August 2004 through October 2008. These trailers are equipped with an MSQR 5000 brake system component that does not meet federal safety standards for antilock brake systems. Specifically, the system does not function as a compliant antilock brake system and lacks a warning light to alert operators of brake malfunctions as required by federal regulations. Pitts Enterprises has not received any complaints or reports of actual on-road failures related to this issue.

Owners of affected trailers should contact the sales department of Pitts Enterprises at 1-334-855-4754. The company will replace the MSQR 5000 system with a compliant system at no cost to owners. The safety recall began on August 5, 2011.

Hazard

THE PURPOSE OF THE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD (FMVSS) FOR AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS, NO. 121, IS TO INSURE SAFE BRAKING PERFORMANCE UNDER NORMAL AND EMERGENCY CONDITIONS. THE MSQR 5000, WHICH WAS INSTALLED IN THE TRAILERS SUBJECT TO THE RECALL TO SATISFY FMVSS NO. 121'S ABS REQUIREMENTS, DOES NOT MEET THE DEFINITION OF AN ABS AS REQUIRED BY FMVSS NO. 121. ALSO, THE TRAILERS DO NOT HAVE A LIGHT TO WARN THE OPERATOR OF AN ABS MALFUNCTION AS REQUIRED BY FMVSS NO. 121. PITTS HAS RECEIVED NO COMPLAINTS OR REPORTS OF ANY ONROAD FAILURES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS NONCOMPLIANCE.

What should I do?

PITTS ENTERPRISES WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE MSQR 5000 SYSTEM WITH A COMPLIANT SYSTEM FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 5, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE SALES DEPARTMENT OF PITTS ENTERPRISES AT 1-334-855-4754.
